How to Make Dried Onions at Home
Table of Contents
Step 1: Prepare the Onions
Choose large onions.
Trim the top and bottom ends, then peel them completely.
Remove the hard center portion, as it does not dry well and affects the taste.
Step 2: Slice the Onions
Cut the onions into long, slightly thick slices.
Avoid slicing them too thin, as they shrink considerably during drying.
Tips
Wear goggles while slicing to reduce eye irritation.
Save the onion peels and use them as organic fertilizer for plants.
Step 3: Separate the Layers
Separate every onion layer by hand after slicing.
This step is essential, as unopened layers may not dry properly and can spoil.
Step 4: Sun Dry
Spread a clean cotton cloth in direct, strong sunlight.
Arrange the onion slices in a single layer without overlapping.
A cotton cloth allows good airflow and helps the onions dry completely in about 2 days.
Step 5: Store
Once the onions are completely dry and crispy, transfer them to a clean, dry glass jar.
Do not pack them too tightly; press them down gently.
Store the jar in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.
Keep the dried onions away from moisture or water.
When stored properly, they can last for up to 1 year.
